Meta Tags: Guide and Policy

What pages do I need to meta tag?

Old pages can totally be meta tagged and if you get free time and are bored go ahead and do it. But really the main focus is on meta tagging new pages as they come out. Also, important and frequently shared ones should be meta tagged if they aren't already, check them as you think of them :-)

Meta tag:

  • Newly released content pages
  • Guide pages and hub pages
  • Popular pages — if you see a page shared around with a generic embed, maybe meta tag it. Also check the highest rated page list.

Don't meta tag:

  • Themes
  • Components

How do I meta tag pages?

UPDATED -

jan Jejasajan Jejasa has created a metatool to automatize the process of metatagging, and making it easier. You can find the instructions here: http://frozenflex1337.wikidot.com/metatool

If you cannot use the metatool to create metatags:

Do not remove the original description and image tags. They are important. If you remove them, it removes them site-wide. If you add new ones with the add to this page button, then you they will automatically override the all pages meta tags.
Sorry for the big text but yknow its important lol.
UPDATE: I'm adding CSS to make it so you have to go to the main page to modify these. That should help lol.

Meta tag a page in [+ Options] -> [Edit Meta] at the bottom of the page. You need to add four meta tags.

  • name="og:title" content="Page Title - The Backrooms Wiki"
  • name="og:description" content="Use common sense and pick a good paragraph for the page preview. Usually the page's first paragraph or the first paragraph of the description section are good picks."
  • name="description" content="same content as og:description"
  • name="og:image" content="http://url-to.your.image"

Omit the image part if a page lacks images.

DO NOT press 'add to all pages'. Press 'add to this page'.

AACK! I accidentally pressed 'add to all pages'!

If you add a meta tag to all pages it will overwrite the default one. It's not a massive deal, as long as you quickly remove the tag and add a replacement all-pages one.

For your reference, here are the default values:
Name Content
og:description Documenting the levels, entities, objects and phenomena of the Backrooms. You've been here before.
og:image http://backrooms-wiki.wikidot.com/local--files/start/opengraphhallprint.png
og:title The Backrooms Wiki
